August  2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On behalf of the John Ashley School staff, I would like to welcome you and your child/children to John Ashley School.  We provide a balanced developmental and academic program which enables each student to reach their potential.  I am excited to announce that we will be getting a new playground this year for our students. I wish to thank Mayor Reichelt and the West Springfield Park and Recreation Department for their support and generosity.

Thursday, August 30, 2018, marks the beginning of this school year.  For John Ashley School, this first day will be a Meet and Greet for Kindergarten students.  Regular classes will not be held. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information and be sure to bring a picture from the summer to add to our “Snapshots of Summer” bulletin board.

Classes and Bus Pick-up for Kindergarten students will begin on Friday,

August 31, 2018. Kindergarten students attend five, full-day sessions, Monday through Friday.  School begins at 9:00 and ends at 3:15. The only required school item is a backpack.  This backpack MUST come to school each day.  We provide everything else!  If you are in need of a backpack, please call and let us know.  If you would like to send in any donations, classroom teachers are always looking for disinfectant wipes and tissues.  Our nurse is in need of new underwear and neutral colored sweatpants.

We are looking forward to working with you and your child to make this year productive and enjoyable.  We strive to be aware of each child’s individual needs and to address them in a positive manner.  We encourage you to form a partnership with us and be involved in your child’s education.  Please pay particular attention to your child’s attendance.  Regular attendance is an advantage to your child.  In addition, we encourage all families to commit to reading together 15 minutes every day.  Reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do to prepare your children for lifelong learning success.

Children’s records must be up-to-date for admission to school.  A physical examination within the last year, appropriate immunizations for all students, and proof of lead testing for kindergarten students are required for entrance to school.  The school secretary will be available at John Ashley School beginning on Monday, August 20, 2018. The school office is open from 8:30-4:00 each day.  Children will be admitted to school as soon as all paperwork is submitted to the Central Enrollment office located on the fourth floor of the Municipal Office Building on 26 Central Street, West Springfield.

We are looking forward to the year ahead filled with many wonderful learning experiences.
